How to sell your videos-on-demand

Monetizing models for selling content have evolved over the years. There is an increasing demand to watch video by all ages across the globe.

In this post, we'll share the common monetization models used by content creators, followed by recommendations on which one to use and how to start.

What is Video-on-demand?

Video-on-demand or VOD, is the ability for viewers to access a video at the time of their choosing.

The many ways of monetizing with video-on-demand

1- Transactional video-on-demand (TVOD)

2- Premium video-on-demand (PVOD)

3- Subscription video-on-demand (SVOD)

4- Ad based video-on-demand (AVOD)

5- Hybrid/varied access (combination)

Transactional video-on-demand (TVOD)

In the Transactional model, the customer pays to access video (rent or buy).

The customer can buy a limited time access or add the video to their library so that they can access and re-watch it.

Some variations of this model include the ability to download the video.

Premium video-on-demand (PVOD)

This monetization model isn’t too different from TVOD. It offers a unique value proposition that commands a higher price.

Examples include:

1- Early access

2- High Quality (4K, UHD)

3- Includes bonus content

Subscription video-on-demand (SVOD)

The subscription model allows viewers to pay a recurring fee to access content.

Variations on model include:

1- Access to a fixed library of videos

2- Access to a growing library of videos

3- Access to a a library of videos from many creators

Ad based video-on-demand (AVOD)

The Ad based model relies on selling ads and leads usually through a 3rd party provider. Variations on this monetization model include:

1- Display sponsor logos

2- Display links to sponsors

3- Display an Ad before, during or after the video plays

Hybrid Model (combination)

A hybrid model, combines two or more of the previous methods mentioned above, for example:

  • Use Premium video-on-demand for limited pre-release

  • Use Transactional video-on-demand for general release

  • Use an Ad based video-on-demand for popular videos by getting your video sponsored

Which video monetization model should you start with?

We recommend starting with the Transactional video-on-demand monetization model in the following way:

1- Allow purchasers to buy a video

2- and add the video to their library for ease of access

3- without the ability to download the video
