About Michael Justin & Michael Justin Studios

The only way to deliver video work to clients. It has changed my business!

Michael Justin  ·  Founder, Michael Justin Studios

Michael Justin is the founder of Michael Justin Studios, a New York-based filmmaking company built around emotional storytelling, polished client experiences, and work that feels personal rather than manufactured.

His filmmaking journey began in 2010, before he had formal training, a production company, or even a clear plan to enter the industry. Michael was preparing to move from San Diego to New York with his then-girlfriend. He knew he wanted to propose after they arrived, and he wanted to capture the moment without revealing the surprise. His solution was to document the entire cross-country road trip.

He filmed every stop, milestone, and ordinary moment along the way. By the time he proposed, he had captured more than a single event. He had the pieces of a complete story. Michael edited the footage into a film and shared it online. The video spread across online magazines and eventually reached nearly one million views.

Michael had arrived in New York without a job, but viewers kept telling him that he should create films like this for other people. With no formal filmmaking education and no established path into the industry, he invested $10,000 in equipment and began teaching himself through online forums, message boards, and trial and error. That leap became the foundation of Michael Justin Studios.

Beyond Weddings

From Elopements to Global Campaigns

Michael Justin Studios was hired to produce video content for Amazon Prime Video's global marketing campaign for Mr. & Mrs. Smith. The campaign centered on a series of elaborate public stunts designed to unfold in real-world environments without bystanders knowing they were staged. Michael's team had to capture each activation discreetly and authentically, documenting both the planned action and the public's unscripted reactions.

The productions included a carefully orchestrated art heist during a real New York City art show, a group of furries heckling Tyra Banks at a Brooklyn Nets game, and a staged citizen's arrest during a Mark Normand comedy performance. Each production required extensive coordination, adaptability, and the ability to capture cinematic content without disrupting the illusion for the unsuspecting audience.

Ultimately, MediaZilla did more than replace DVDs. It improved the client experience, streamlined my workflow, reduced support issues, and gave me a delivery platform that felt modern, professional, and scalable.

Michael is also known for the Long Con proposal series, which has generated more than 10 million views across social media. Each film centers on an elaborate surprise proposal captured with hidden cameras, actors, and carefully coordinated setups, all without the bride ever seeing the production team.

The deception continues long after the proposal. Michael secretly holds the completed film for more than a year, finally revealing it at the couple's wedding reception as a surprise for the bride. To date, the series includes Long Con: New York and Long Con: Paris.

Together, Michael's portfolio spans intimate wedding films, international proposal stories, Emmy-winning productions, and global commercial campaigns. Regardless of the project, his focus remains the same: creating films that feel authentic, emotionally memorable, and worth revisiting for years to come.

The Challenge

Delivery Was Becoming a Bottleneck

Before MediaZilla, one of Michael's biggest business pain points was delivering the finished product. At the time, wedding films were still commonly delivered on DVDs. Completing the edit was only the beginning. Michael then had to design a DVD menu, encode the film, burn several discs, test every copy, package the order, and ship it.

A single failed or corrupted disc could force him to repeat hours of work. Even successful deliveries created new problems. Some discs would not play properly in a client's DVD player, computer, or gaming system. Michael found himself acting as technical support for outdated hardware instead of focusing on filmmaking, editing, client relationships, and business growth.

The frustration ran deeper because delivery was often the final interaction a client had with the company. After investing enormous care into a meaningful, polished film, the experience ended with a format that felt unreliable, dated, and unnecessarily complicated.

Michael wanted a solution that would

  1. Speed up delivery
  2. Raise perceived package value
  3. Improve client experience
  4. Require less delivery administration

Michael first discovered MediaZilla through an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign. Backing the company was a gamble. He had supported other projects that never delivered, and the limited lifetime membership represented a meaningful expense for a young business. Still, he believed online delivery was clearly the future and decided to take the risk.

The Solution

Why MediaZilla Won

MediaZilla removed nearly all the friction from Michael's delivery workflow. Instead of building a DVD menu from scratch, he could upload a completed project and organize the wedding film, ceremony, speeches, dances, and other videos into one professional presentation.

Clients no longer needed a particular player, computer drive, or software. They could access their films online and watch them on the devices they already used. Couples could also share their films with family and friends without mailing extra discs or trying to upload large files themselves.

The shift improved more than convenience. The final presentation became an extension of the quality of the film itself. It felt modern, intentional, and consistent with the experience Michael wanted his clients to remember.

VI

The Outcome

MediaZilla Became a Game Changer

A Faster, Simpler Workflow

Michael no longer spends hours designing menus, burning and testing discs, packaging orders, mailing them, or troubleshooting playback problems. Delivery that once involved several separate steps can now be managed through one online platform.

A Better Client Experience

Clients receive an organized home for their films that is easy to watch, navigate, and share. Their memories are more accessible, which also means the films are more likely to be revisited and shared with others.

Fewer Support Problems

Online access removed many of the compatibility issues that came with DVDs. Michael could spend less time solving playback problems and more time editing, communicating with clients, and building the business.

Stronger Package Value

Michael gives MediaZilla a specific monetary value inside his wedding film packages rather than treating it as a free delivery link. It is positioned as part of the finished client experience, not as an invisible utility.

Protected Pricing

When a couple is comparing packages or hesitating before signing, Michael can include MediaZilla as an added benefit without discounting his core creative services. That helps the package feel more valuable while protecting the price of the work that depends on his time, team, equipment, and expertise.

More Confident Sales Conversations

Over time, MediaZilla has helped Michael strengthen packages, overcome price objections, avoid unnecessary discounts, and get bookings across the finish line.

MediaZilla started as a solution to a delivery problem, but it ultimately became a revenue-protection and booking tool as well.

A Story Worth Telling

The First Wedding Michael Never Got to Deliver

Michael's first wedding assignment nearly ended his filmmaking journey before it truly began. After posting an advertisement on Craigslist offering to film a wedding for free, a photographer invited him to tag along to an upcoming event. The wedding was on a boat, which was hardly an easy environment for a first-time filmmaker.

Michael admits the footage was poor, but the couple never had the chance to see it. A few days later, he transferred the footage to his only hard drive. The drive fell, became corrupted, and the files were lost. He had already recorded over the original camera cards, so there was no backup and no way to recover the project.

Protect your footage, trust your instincts, and create the work you want to be hired to make.

The experience was painful, but it shaped his professional standards. It taught him that preparation, redundancy, and backup systems are not optional details. They are part of the responsibility a filmmaker accepts when entrusted with irreplaceable memories.

After that beginning, quitting would have been understandable. Michael chose to continue. Years later, that same self-taught filmmaker became a two-time New York Emmy Award winner.

Advice for Other Filmmakers

Protect the Work, Protect the Vision

Michael's advice combines two lessons: protect the work, and protect the creative identity behind it.

From a practical standpoint, filmmakers need a real redundancy and backup system from day one. Drives fail, cards become corrupted, and equipment gets damaged. Footage should be duplicated as soon as possible, stored in multiple locations, and protected until the final project has been delivered.

Creatively, Michael encourages filmmakers to stop chasing other people's styles. Early in his career, he spent too much time comparing his work with films already receiving attention. Over time, he learned that constantly imitating others can pull a creator further from the reason they started.

His advice is to develop your own instincts, perspective, and way of telling a story. Honest, specific work will not appeal to everyone, but it will attract the clients who recognize themselves in it and trust the filmmaker's vision.
